Small Gas Grills question by prkushun: Can I use a small grill propane tank with my fireplace?
We moved into this house 4 years ago and have never had the propane tank for the gas fireplace filled, basically because we’d only want to use it 3 or 4 nights/year, so it’s hardly worth the $ 200-$ 300 to fill it. The gas company charges us to rent their tanks, so we’re considering having them take their tanks away and using a small propane tank like you’d use for a grill instead. Is that possible? Is it safe?

I assume you are talking about one of those little 4 foot tall tanks sitting just outside your fireplace chimney and I further assume it is dedicated to just the fireplace.
If the capacity of the grill tank is enough to run the fireplace for a couple of times then do it.

Me personally, If I could get the (grill) tank to connect to the gas line securely I would do it in a heart beat but I dont know where you live and there may be some sort of neighborhood code that will prevent this.

If you call the gas company and ask them about this they will give you a thousand reasons why you cant do it but that is because they want you to pay for their tanks

How about caliing your existing gas company and asking them to bring over the smallest tank they carry.
Should be cheaper to rent and fill.
Or, if they do not want to work with you, call around to all the other gas companies in your area and find the best deal.

You can rent filled propane tanks at a Gas Products Supply businesses too. Those are places that rent “bottled” gasses of all kinds. For limited use, that may be a good way to go. Look into that.

Take a picture (Close up) of the tank connector and the tank. Then go to the hardware store and ask for an adaptor (If needed) They sell all the adapters to convert gas grills. I can’t see this being any different.

AS long as you can get the proper fittings for the connection there would be no problem, unless it was a code violation in your area.

of course you can.people do it all the time when the big tank is out. the tank may belong to the gas company but the regulator and line are yours. take the line off the tank [its left handed threads] and hook it up to your bottle. it will fit on the bottle with no problem. make sure the bottle is secured upright. when its empty go and exchange it for a full one. a minimum fill of propane in a big tank in central texas is 100 gallons and is $ 2.60 per gallon.
